Spiritual Discernment

Discernment is a way of listening and paying attention to God's leading.  It is an avenue to bring God into our decision making.  Discernment begins with putting God in the center of everything we do as individuals and organizations.  It involves being available to God so that we may hear God's longing for our lives and the vision for our churches.

Many people ask, "How do we know what God wants us to do?" and "How do we know when God is speaking and it is not our voice echoing our own desires?"  Discernment is the way by which the answer comes to the first question  and the way to sort the voices in the second question.  Spiritual Discernment is about finding God's yearning for the directio to live.  It is not a once and for all answer to all questions.  Spiritual discernment is a continual seeking for God's longing, and an acceptance of the invitiation to live into the abundance and depth of life God so freely offers.

Spiritual Discernment is not easy for individuals or for organizations.  We have to be willing to change, to put God's desires above our own and to trust that God wants what is best for us.  We also have to be willing to deepen our relationship with the Triune God knowing that God loves us, Jesus walks with us and Holy Spirit acts as our guide.

We have found that many people and churches want a "how to" book on discernment.  They want to learn a process and apply it to their personal and corporate lives. Our workbooks: Living Into the Answers: A Personal Guide to Spiritual Discernment and Discernment Into Transformation: A Corporate Guide to Spiritual Discernment are written as guides for the process.  We hope that they are the beginning steps in the process which results in discernemnt becoming a way of life.
